New Mustangs

Ford GT! ..... What a Great Sports Car!

Saleen Mustang Parnelli Jones LE 2007 - Another Great Sports Car!

I went to 3 Ford dealers looking for either of these Great cars.... And guess what? .... Not one! What is up with that? .... Is gas prices so high that no one is buying?

Shelby Mustang - The only had one of these great sports cars at only one of the Ford dealers I went to. Again... Nice care! I would love to have all 3. (And then some!)

I'm really glad to see Ford making the sports cars again. The only thing I wish is that Ford and Chevy never did gave a 4 cylinder Mustang or Camaro. It really did hurt the glory of the sports car to my opinion that there are too many out there that are not worth saying, "Wow!!!" to when they drive by, that when the real one goes by.... It seems as if the glory is a little gone. I personally have a 1982 5.0 G.T. High Output Ford Mustang. It is a great car. except for 2 things. The first issue is in the interior design. It wasn't thought out well enough for comfort, and places to put any personal belongings. The other is that on the 82 year model; the visor doesn't have any snap in place type connector that would prevent the visors flying at the driver and passenger when hitting the gas in any high speed jump of power.

My Mustang looks like the one about... But mine is metallic Silver and is now missing it's hood and engine. I had my Mustang  stolen, and when I got it back it's full chrome auditioned duel timing chained, 4 intake Holly carp. engine was gone with it's hood scoped hood. Now my car sits in my garage sadly with out it's need for speed down the open highway.

coming 2009!

Spy Shots: 2009 Acura TSX

Yesterday, Ben Stewart over at Popular Mechanics had a close encounter of the prototype kind while spending some time on the Angeles Crest Highway in So. Cal. He caught a glimpse of a camo'd current generation Accord sitting in a local lot and, knowing that it could be driven away at a moment's notice, began snapping pics of the moribund mule.

Now, an Accord sporting an ill-fitting bra is nothing to get too excited over, until Ben figured out that it's actually the next generation Acura TSX in drag. Supposedly, underneath the body panels is the "new" TSX chassis, necessitating those awkwardly flared fenders, housing 225/50ZR17 tires.

He came to this unlikely conclusion after noticing a few other TSXs following the mule (comparison testing) and when he got back to the office, he made few calls. Turns out that the new TSX will be based off the European Accord platform that came out a couple years back. It's likely that Acura will use the turbo mill that's found in the new RDX in the new TSX, with the option of sending power to all four wheels.

What's it going to look like you ask? Less crease, more swoop is the short answer. But if you need a bit more detail than that, check the Honda Sports4 Concept that debuted at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show.

2007 Chevrolet HHR Premiere Edition

2007 Chevrolet HHR Premiere Edition Brief
Get 'em while they're not so hot!  by Christian Wardlaw
What it Is

Chevrolet HHR Premiere Edition Brief – 2007 Detroit Auto Show: Special editions of popular vehicles usually arrive around the same time that consumer interest wanes in an effort to give sales a boost. And so it is with the 2007 Chevrolet HHR Premiere Edition, of which only 4,000 examples will be built in the ridiculously titled “2LT” trim. For $995, buyers get black chrome exterior accents, smoked lighting lenses, color-keyed body parts, a tape stripe, and a rear spoiler. Inside, custom floor mats and contrasting stitching for the leather-wrapped wheel try hard to keep the HHR from looking cheap. Finally, each one is painted Cappuccino Frost Metallic – light brown for the Starbucks-impaired.

Chrysler posts video of Dodge Demon concept on YouTube

Chrysler has created some B-Roll footage of the Dodge Demon concept on the road and posted it up on YouTube. The clip is is intended for use as background footage to accompany news reports on the car, so it has no audio track. You'll just have add your own sound effects or turn up your iPod.

Production Dodge Challenger will be unveiled one year from today

The Chrysler Group has announced that the production version of the Dodge Challenger will be unveiled at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show exactly one year from now. We have 356 days to wait until the first official challenger, so to speak, to the Ford Mustang's dominance will enter the ring. Until then, the current Challenger Concept vehicle will be accompanied by a countdown clock at every auto show it attends this year, just to remind Challenger fans how many more saving days, minutes and seconds are left. We're extremely eager see to what changes will be made on the production version of the Challenger since the concept looks almost ready to go right now. It will be the first coupe built on Chrysler's LX platfrom and, as we reported yesterday, will be built alongside its siblings, the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Magnum, at the company's Brampton, Ontario plant.

Dodge unveils new 2007 Sprinter

click on above image to view addition high-res images of the 2007 Dodge Sprinter

So the embargo on material for the new 2007 Dodge Sprinter lifted at midnight last night. Yeah, we forgot about it, too. Nevertheless, the Sprinter's in a class by itself when it comes to commercial vans offered by the Big 3 (2.5, whatever). The 2007 model is all new and gets crazy with the dimensions adding a Super Size model for those who always want fries with that. Compared to last year's largest model, the new Sprinter has increases in width (two inches), interior height (11 inches), exterior height (13 inches), cargo area length (19 inches), vehicle length (30 inches), cargo volume (127 cu. ft.), and towing capacity (2,500 lbs.). For the discriminating business owner, there are no less than three vehicles lengths, two wheelbases, three interior roof heights, and two engines. The two new motors are a 3.0L V6 diesel that produces 154 horsepower and 280 ft-lbs. of torque at 1,200 to 2,400 rpm, and a 3.5L gas V6 making 254 horsepower and 250 ft-lbs. of torque at 2,500 to 5,000 rpm. Both engines are routed through a five-speed automatic. In its largest form, the new Sprinter can swallow 600 cubic feet of stuff in one bite. No doubt the courier industry is excited to see the new 2007 Sprinter, even if we aren't.

Check out the full press release from Dodge after the jump, as well as our gallery that shows both commercial and passenger versions of the new 2007 Dodge Sprinter.

Dodge Challenger to be built at Brampton, Ontario plant

Click on the photo for a high-res gallery of Challenger concept images

On this day of bloodletting at Chrysler, there is at least one good piece of news from Auburn Hills. In what should be a surprise to precisely no one, Chrysler has made it official that when the Dodge Challenger enters production, it will roll off the line of the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant. Since the Challenger is built off Chrylser's LX platform, and is likely to be relatively low in volume compared to the Mustang, it makes sense to build it alongside it's platform mates, the Magnum, Charger, and Chrysler 300. Production of the Challenger will kick off in the spring of 2008, making this a 2009 model. The Chrysler press release is after the jump.

BorgWarner gets tapped to provide AWD system for Avenger

Following on the heels of the successful AWD adaptation of the Chrysler Pacifica, Borg Warner has been tapped once again to outfit the Sebring and Avenger models with all-wheel motiviation. The Borg will supply the hardware as well as the electronic controls and support for integrating the system with the rest of the platform. BW has a line of products specifically aimed at adapting AWD to front-drive platforms. Known as iTrac, the suite of products is designed to interface with stability and traction control systems. With everything working in concert, the Interactive Torque Management (ITM 3e©) system is designed to offer the sure-footed dynamics of an AWD chassis with no fuel economy penalty. At highway speeds, power transfer to the rear wheels is reduced, lowering friction and allowing for better fuel economy.

Whether or not AWD is entirely necessary (a full suite of four snow tires and a prudent driver are often nearly as effective) remains to be seen, but it is popular. With the buying public being sold on AWD as a safety feature, it benefits manufacturers when they can offer it on more of their models, and it's a further benefit when the platform doesn't need much re-engineering for the extra hardware.

UPDATE: PRNewswire has issued a correction stating that the release should not have specified the Chrysler Sebring at all. The news applies only to the Dodge Avenger.

Back to the drawing board: DCX working on more rebuilding, more sharing

DCX could end up sharing more platforms going forward

Oh, how time flies when you're paying attention to the domestic auto industry. About a year and a half ago the Chrysler 300 was selling like crazy, the Charger was off to a fast start, and analysts were saying nice things about the company from Auburn Hills. Well the 300 and Charger are still a resounding success, and life for Chrysler has taken a turn for the worse anyway. A $1.2 Billion loss in the 3rd quarter put the scare into the folks over in Stuttgart and now management and share holders are looking for more cost cutting and less payroll.

It looks like 1,000 white collar and 10,000 blue collar jobs are now on the block as a large part of the effort to remain competitive. Buyouts will likely surface soon after the announcement plans are announced, and the cost associated with the move will result in more tough quarterly financials for Chrysler. There will be tough times again in Auburn Hills, but some good news may come out of all this for customers and Chrysler employees alike.

Dodge Demon Concept will debut in Geneva

ciick above image to view 28 high-resolution pics of the Dodge Demon Concept

Congrats to Dodge and the boys at DaimlerChrysler for keeping the Dodge Demon Concept completely under wraps until now. As of 12:01AM on 2/12, however, the embargo has lifted and we're allowed to tell you about this Dodge-branded MX-5 killa destined to debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. It's no accident that we've invoked the Mazda MX-5 so quickly as a comparison for the Demon Concept, as Dodge freely admits the Japanese roadster was its benchmark when designing the car. The Demon is a smidge shorter than the MX-5, though a bit wider, taller and heavier. Unlike the concept's shown by DaimlerChrysler so far this autoshow season like the Chrysler Nassau and Jeep Trailhawk, the Demon Concept has been built from the ground up and uses no existing platform. It does, however, use one of DCX's existing engines – the 2.4L four-cylinder World Engine that sends 172 horsepower and 165 ft-lbs. of torque to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Dodge officials tell us a number of engines could be used in the Demon, including the 1.8 or 2.0L World Engine. A 300-hp motor, probably the one that powers the Caliber SRT-4, was also spoken of when we were initially introduced to the Demon by DCX.

There's more info after the jump, and have a gander at our gallery of 28 high-resolution pics to judge the Demon's design for yourself. You can also read the official press release from Dodge after the jump.

BMW to start building sportvans

Could this portend the impending doom of the SUV as family car? BMW will be adding sportvans to their lineup beginning with the F5 in 2009. The basis for the F5 will be provided by the X5. Following on the heels of the F5 will be a van based on the 3-series called, quite naturally, the F3. Underneath the five-door five-placers will likely be found several power options, as well as available all-wheel drive with rear-wheel drive standard. The rhetoric is that large diameter wheels will be avoided, as they mainly detract from ride quality, add unsprung weight, and don't help handling as much as you'd think. The picture seems to run contrary to that statement, as the wheels fill the openings, but perhaps the graphic artist just got a little crazy.

VIDEO: BMW "See How It Feels" campaign launches

BMW's new 60 second TV spot is something of an automotive Fantasia. Remember the segment of that animated masterpiece where a symphony plays and the emotion behind the sounds are displayed in Technicolor glory? Well, think music, emotions, and motoring here. Bringing the exhiliration one feels when piloting a Beemer to visible life, sights of different BMW models explode into lights and swirls all accompanied by a fresh arrangement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony by UNKLE. This new campaign was created by Nick Thornton-Jones and Warren Du Preez of Wanted Films. Follow the jump to watch the whole commercial.

Thanks, Martijn!

BMW intros M Sport 3-series coupe & convertible, 130i Limited Edition

BMW 320i Convertible M Sport
Click for image gallery

BMW has introduced the M Sport package for its Euro and UK-market 3-Series coupe and convertible. According to the UK division, M Sport models have accounted for the overwhelming majority of 6-cylinder 3-series coupe and convertible sales in the past, and based on how the new one looks, that shouldn't change. On the 3, the M Sport kit includes an areo package, sport suspension featuring a 15mm drop, standard 18" or optional 19" wheels and an M Sport-exclusive finish to the window surrounds. Inside, you'll find blue sport seats, M-badging on the doorsills, a short-throw shifter and an M steering wheel, among other things. It's available in four colors.

BMW 130i M Sport Launch EditionThe European hot-hatch segment will be graced with the BMW 130i M Sport Limited edition. Based on the 265-horsepower 130i M Sport, the Limited Edition will be available exclusively with a Carbon Black metallic finish. The interior, with its Lemon leather, should provide quite a bold contrast to the paint scheme. 18" WTCC-style wheels are standard issue. All the other 1-Series M Sport accoutrements (aero package, interior upgrades, etc.) are included, natch. (130i M Sport Launch Edition in Le Mans Blue shown above right.)

New X5 scores 'good' rating in IIHS testing

In the automotive world, safety can be a bit under-rated. In past years governments all over the world have mandated tougher and tougher safety standards that are helping to keep all of us safe. It seems BMW has taken the challenge of safety very seriously as its X5 "Sport Activity Vehicle" has racked up a nice string of GOOD ratings from the IIHS. Testing revealed that there was a very low risk of injury from all of the major tests, which means the X5 is not only great looking and fun to drive, it will also get you from point A to point B very safely. Side curtain air bags for all three rows of seats, stability control, and a rollover sensor were among the advancements that gave the X5 the IIHS top overall rating.

2007 Chicago Auto Show: BMW Alpina B7 - An M7 in all but name

Click image for additional high-res live shots added to the original media pic gallery

They finally brought it out, so we covered it. Actually, we shouldn't sound so aloof. After announcing the BMW Alpina B7 way back in February of 2006, the Bavarians finally decided to show us the production version here in Chicago. And although it wasn't much of a revelation, it WAS a rather impressive vehicle in person. As we just told you last week, it's basically an M7 in all but name. The slightly streamlined 7-series adds the not-so-subtle Alpina classic rims (all 21 inches of them), a revised dash with a unique cluster, and the signature Alpina front and rear aero aids. Oh, and that supercharger underhood helps this particular V8 pump out 500 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Channeled through an Alpine refined version of the 6-speed auto tranny, that's good enough for a 0-60 sprint of 4.8 seconds and a VMAX of 186 mph. All for a starting price of $115,695. That's a full 40 large over a standard run-of-the-mill short wheelbase 7-series, but with only 200 of the B7s coming to these shores, it's likely they won't have any problem moving them. Original press release can be found after the jump.

F1ce-capades! BMW Sauber's F1 car on frozen lake

F1 on iceI

In the course of my career, I've spent plenty of time driving all kinds of vehicles on frozen lakes and snow fields, the most powerful being an all wheel drive Lamborghini Diablo that I flung around on a lake in Northern Sweden some years ago.

I've also tested some race cars on pavement, but I've never experienced anything quite like the video included after the jump. In it, a BMW-Sauber driver takes his F1 car onto a frozen lake in St. Moritz, Switzerland for a little on-ice demo. Now that looks like fun.

Follow the jump to watch.

Thanks to Derek for the tip!

New BMW 7-series will come with 8-speed transmission

When BMW released the redesigned 7-series back in 2001, they were the first to offer a six-speed automatic transmission. Two years later, Mercedes upped the ante by throwing an additional cog into the mix, equipping their new S-class with a seven-speed auto. Now that Lexus is offering an eight-speed slush box in their waftastic LS460, BMW has vowed not be left behind in the ratio wars and plans to bring an nine- eight-speed transmission to market by the end of the decade.

The next 7-series will be due for a substantial redesign by 2009 or 2010, so that's when industry analysts expect the eight-speed box to find its way into BMW's luxury sedan. The engineering haus, ZF Friedrichsafen, has been tapped to create the new automatic and has plenty of experience increasing fuel economy, while decreasing build costs, on the current model's six-speed automatic.

When will this cog-swapping numbers race end? We're not entirely sure, but as soon as manufacturers start cresting the double digits, we doubt anyone will even be paying attention.

Audi 2007 (Great Valentine's Gift!)

Christies postpones Auto Union auction

Wow. This is kind of a letdown. What was expected to be among the most valuable vehicles ever sold at auction, the Auto Union Type D, has been pulled at the 11th hour. Auction house Christie's made the announcement that they had postponed the Auto Union's sale "pending further exploration into the car's race history." No other explanation was given. The Auto Union GP car was expected to draw insane bids at the upcoming Retromobile auction in Paris.

While we wouldn't want to make any assumptions about the vehicle's authenticity, that is frequently the cause of lots being pulled or vehicles failing to attract interest from bidders. Hemmings relates the words of Philip Powell at Classical Drive who supports the notion that the postponement could be a sign that the Type D is not 100% kosher.

The car's history is known, from being totally rebuilt after being reduced to just a driveline in an accident, to being found in the former Soviet Union, but the questions can linger in the minds of potential owners. It should be noted, however, that Christies is investigating the car's race history, not its authenticity, per se. We saw something similar in Arizona last month when a rare Ferrari Dino SP failed to crack the $1 million mark and didn't meet its reserve, going unsold. The car had been well-documented, but because it had been nearly totaled in a racing incident, the rebuilt car can sometimes raise doubts among buyers who would rather have the genuine article than one rebuilt by a non-factory team years after its birth.

[Source: Hemmings]

OK, lets start out by saying that this is merely a design study of what a TT could look like in 13 years. Having said that, is it 2020 yet? This Veyron-like beauty is hot. Bulgarian economist and car designer Nikola Vargov obviously has some sick skills because this looks much better than any Audi (or just about anything else) on the road and if it were on sale next to the great-looking new TT for the same price (It doesn't cost much more to bend sheet metal, right?) then I'm sure it would win most sales battles. Here's an idea. Sell this AND the TT and do it soon.

Thanks for the tip, Christian!

Going odd: Audi A7 renderings

CG cars assault us from all angles, whether we know it or not. These days, much of what we see in car spots on television is created from bits of data, not bits of ore. No matter, the renderings are still labor-intensive to produce. For spots, the animators are often working with CAD files provided by the manufacturer's engineering department. The ability to create a CG car out of thin air is a boon to the concept-rendering community as well. An obvious example of CG's capability is the recent Superduty Superbowl ad. Less obvious use of CG can be found in Jeep's "Bigger, Deffer" spot, where the entire Wrangler is assembled out of 0's and 1's.

French digital artist extrodinaire Gabriel Rabhi has harnessed processor cycles to create an Audi A7 out of pure conjecture. Of course, there is no such thing as an A7 (yet), but rumors abound. Rabhi created the car as a skill-building exercise, to get a better handle on modelling techniques for complex objects. The multiple facets of an automobile's structure and skin are time consuming and often difficult to model. Cars are created almost entirely out of complex curves, and the only way to geometrically model such an organic form is by using NURBS curves. If it sounds complex, that's because it is.

KTM X-Bow scheduled for Geneva debut

This time last year, rumors of a joint collaboration between Audi and motorcycle manufacturer KTM to build a lightweight, street-legal, track toy began to surface. Finally, after a year of speculation, a series of miscalculated renderings and a few hard facts, it's official: KTM will be unveiling the X-Bow in Geneva next month.

Notice however, that we only said KTM. According to Brit-pub EVO, Audi contended that if the four-rings were affixed to the bonnet, the lil' track terror would have to be weighed down with pesky safety equipment, like airbags. KTM wasn't wiling to let their baby go down like that, so they took it upon themselves to continue the project sans-Audi.

EVO has seen the X-Bow and says that there are three prototypes that are currently being built. The first is for chassis tuning, the second is doomed to crash tests and the third will be slobbered on by those of us attending the Geneva show.

As for the techy-tidbits: the six-speed manual version will tip the scales at just over 1,500 pounds, with an Audi-sourced DSG adding an additional 44 pounds. Power will come from Audi's 2-liter, inline-four turbo which should be producing anywhere between 220 and 300 HP and the engine will be placed in such a way that the added weight of the driver will balance out the chassis.

You'll also notice that the X-Box lacks a windshield, due to the fact that European law requires that if there were a windshield, the manufacturer would have to add wipers and a defogging system. Instead, buyers will get a set of custom helmets to protect them from the elements, and when not in use they can be stored in a little cubby in the cabin.

Testing has already begun and EVO reports that sales will begin during the latter half of 2007, with a one-make race series coming in 2008. Salivating much? We are.

Time To Shine: Audi Looking to Grow Sales in US

In Europe, Audi is a brand to be reckoned with. Globally, Audi is only behind such juggernauts as Mercedes and BMW for luxury supremacy, with sales of 903,000 vehicles worldwide. Here in the USA, however, Audi is playing catch-up. With only 90,000 sales, Audi is currently behind Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Cadillac, Acura, Lincoln, Infiniti, and Volvo. As a matter of fact, both the Lexus RX 350 and the BMW 3 Series best the Audi brand on its own. Only the A4 puts up respectable numbers, totaling about 50,000 sales in '06. Well, nothing increases sales numbers more than new product and right now Audi is in the middle of launching 19 new products between 2005 and 2007. The A3 and Q7 have been in the market for some time, the TT, R8 and recently spied A5 are coming just around the bend.

With all the new products coming on board, the next step for Audi will be to improve its image and get its vehicles to the forefront of customers minds. To do that, Audi executives are looking to improve marketing, dive head-first into internet-based ads, and add more exclusive Audi dealers. With Americans looking more and more at luxury vehicles as a source of expression, Audi is executing its strategy at the right time. Audi's long-term goal is to produce 1.4 million vehicles by 2015. That would give the German automaker about 80,000 more sales than the BMW group had in 2006. Good luck, Audi. Good luck.

Buick

Buick LaCrosse shamed with one-star crash performance, receives tweaks

Nothing dings like a one-star crash test performance from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration. While the 2007 Buick LaCrosse did receive five stars for protecting the driver and passenger in a frontal crash, three stars for protecting rear passengers in a side-impact crash and four stars for resisting roll overs, it's the one-star rating it received for failing to protect the driver and front-seat passenger in side impacts that stands out. General Motors has already tweaked the door trim of the LaCrosse in an effort to improve the car's performance in this particular crash test, but the NHTSA has yet to retest this 2007.5 LaCrosse that has been in production since last month.

[Source: Automotive News]

RIP: Buick Rainier

As General Motors refines the future of their brands, they're trimming out redundancy and we have a hard time coming up with a more redundant vehicle than the multitude of GMT 360 based 'utes across all the GM brands.

The Buick Rainier is one version of this ubiquitous platform that no longer has any reason for living; thus, production will end during the second quarter of 2007. Buick's plan is to trim the lineup back to three or four models, while focusing on developing and turning them out extremely well. The focus of Buick's future is taking the brand further into luxury, rather than offering everything the other divisions do, but with plusher seats. The buying public has found religion with car-based CUVs, as well, so dropping the Rainier to focus on execution of the Enclave is a shrewd move. Competition from other luxury brands, such as the Lexus RX vehicles, which have been based off car platforms since their inception are preferred by consumers and no amount of niceties inside will make up for the lumbering feel of a body-on-frame truck. Rather than have two vehicles vying for consumers hearts -- and confusing them in the process -- we laud the decision to lay the Rainier to rest.

[Source: Detroit Free Press]

Pint-sized Buick on the horizon?

It ain't no Skyhawk. Actually, we're not even sure this is the model that Buick may be contemplating bringing Stateside. Perusing their Chinese offerings, however, this seems like the most likely bet for a smaller Buick to slot below the LaCrosse. The only other Chinese Buick that makes a sliver of sense is the Royaum, based on the Omega platform (Catera, GTO), but that's a larger car aimed at dignitaries who prefer riding to driving. There are no facts to offer yet, other than Buick is analyzing whether offering an entry-level car under the LaCrosse is a good move.

There's debate among GM execs about whether a kiddie-pool Buick is the way to go. Some feel that it'd be a bad move, and the brand should focus on moving upscale, but we don't think that "upscale" and "entry-level" are mutually exclusive. There is a market for premium small cars; witness the MINI. If the car were fussed over enough to have the General's current, much improved, level of fit and finish, some dashing style, and offer capable and competitive powertrains and performance, they could have a winner on their hands. If it's indeed the Excelle, we'd be inclined to leave it. It's based on the Daewoo Nubira, and while it looks nice enough and it's not a bad car, there's still a yawning gap to leap into a LaCrosse. We haven't seen the likes of four-cylinder Buicks since the 1990s, and very few of them were of any interest (T-Type Skyhawks, Somersets and Skylarks get a pass). If there was proper development put into a smaller Buick, we'd welcome the return of a car to fill the Skylark's old shoes. We're not seeing that car in the current Chinese lineup, where the focus is more on uber cushy appointments inside, large size, and conservative styling. Hmm.. That doesn't sound half bad if it winds up on a chassis with some starch in the suspenders.

Beater of the Day: 1989 Buick Skyhawk

What better way to start off this week's salute to beaters than to bring you a rusted and busted 1989 Buick Skyhawk?

With just a few ticks over 119k on the clock, Flickr member Circax inherited this particular J-body from his grandfather and although it looks worse for the wear, it still manages to provide him a means of navigating his daily slog. Equipped with a 2-liter four that in its heyday was producing around 100 HP, this old biddy still has some spunk, although its maladies are both obvious and numerous.

We took the liberty of posting Circax's own trials and tribulations after the jump, but a few highlights include his use of krazy glue to mend the wires for the cruise control and his application of thumbtacks to keep the roof's headliner in place.

We love it, so we posted a few more pics after the jump, along with directions on how to submit your own ride to our Flickr account. Bring the beaters people. We want more.

Buick Enclave pricing released

$32,790

That's the minimum, early-summer buy-in for what is arguably Buick's most exciting, most innovative product in decades. That just-under 33 grand purchases a front wheel drive CX model with standard 275hp V6, Buick's first 6-speed tranny, xenon lights, heated mirrors, power liftgate, stability control, six airbags, disc brakes all around, multi-zone climate control, XM satellite radio and a few other expected goodies. For $2,000 more, you get to power all four wheels on the CX. Step up to the CXL front-wheel drive for $34,990 and four-wheel for $36,990. Not sure yet what the extra money for the CXL gets you, though.

Options include front passenger opening sunroof with rear skylight, bigger wheels (natch), more speakers, fold flat rear seat, back-up camera and articulating headlights.

While it's definitely a huge improvement over past Buick offerings, the Enclave has some serious competition in this price range. It will have to fight Acura's RDX, Honda's Pilot, Ford's Edge, the Infinit FX35, the Lexus R350, Lincoln MKX, and the Volvo XC90 for sales. Add some of those fancier options to the Acadia and the price tag could climb on up into Cayenne territory. It's a tough segment and we hope the General is sending the Enclave to a gun fight armed with more than a very nice looking switchblade.

Be sure to check out our huge selection of Enclave photos.

Spy Shots: 2008 Buick LaCrosse Super

We reported early last year that the Buick LaCrosse would likely be getting a Super Sport or Sport model boasting a 300-horsepower V8. The program is still ongoing and we found this most recent spy shot published on the Detroit News Insider (our intel, however, reveals this shot was taken in November of 2006). As reported, the LaCrosse Sport will have a front end tweaked to recall the 2004 Velite Concept with a new grille shape and different headlights. Though not shown on this mule, there will also be side skirts and a deck lid spoiler.

The LaCrosse Super will basically be Buick's version of the Chevy Impala SS, and thus is a product that will likely cost the brand pennies on the dollar to develop. It will use the same 5.3-liter V8 producing three C-notes of horsey power, and will also wear 18-inch alloys. Our insider sources, however, don't believe the LaCrosse Sport will get Delphi's MagneRide suspension as the Detroit News reports. The system, that's also used on the Corvette, Cadillacs and Ferraris, would be a major expanse for a badge engineered product like this.

Aston Martin 2007

Aston Martin Vanquish S going out in style with Ultimate Edition, stickshift conversion

Aston Martin's range-topping GT, the Vanquish S, is nearing the end of its run as the British marque's top dog, and to give it a proper sendoff, a special edition will be built. The Vanquish S Ultimate Edition, limited to just 40 cars, will be finished in a model-specific Ultimate Black paint. Inside, the all-black cabin will feature dark chrome accents, exclusive leather and stitching treatments, and of course, the requisite special-model plaques informing the occupants which number of the forty cars they're riding in. The Vanquish S powertrain is unchanged, and given that it's good for 200 mph, it's not as if it needed anything. Pricing will also be in line with the standard Vanquish S.

In other news relating to the Vanquish, Aston Martin's Works Service division has announced the availability of a kit that will allow existing customers to have their cars converted from the standard paddle-shifter setup to a true stick-shift manual gearbox. Pricing for that bit of surgery starts at £13,250 + VAT.

Click on the photo of the Rapide for a gallery of high-res pics of modern Aston-Martins

It was not so many years ago that Aston Martin celebrated the production of their 10,000th car. Ever! It took more than five decades for the company to build it's first 10,000 cars. Now Aston is making plans to build that many cars annually and challenge Bentley. For the most part Ford's adventure in building expensive British vehicles has been a resounding financial failure (see Jaguar and Land Rover), with the distinct exception of the apparently now profitable Aston Martin.

Since the mid-nineties introduction of the DB7, the firm has been transformed from a place where craftsman hammered out aluminum body panels by hand to assemble quaint but expensive luxury coupes into a manufacturer of high-tech, high-performance sports-GT cars. Before the launch of the DB7 Aston was turning out about 300 cars a year. The DB7 started out at 700 per year. Last year, 7,000 Aston Martin cars were produced. Now on the brink of a spin-off from Ford, Aston Martin is studying how to increase production because their main plant in Gaydon is already running at full capacity.

The popularity of the DB9 (2500 units in 2006) and Vantage (4200 copies) has caused the company to back off on plans to build the Rapide four door that was shown last year. With plans for a new Vanquish, a production version of the DBS from the latest James Bond movie and the Rapide, a number of options are being evaluated. Possibilities include moving body-in-white and tub assembly and painting out of the Gaydon plant, or potentially building an extension to the plant. No final decision is expected until after the sale of the company is completed.

Motor Trend: Aston Martin sold, but maybe not to LVMH

Motor Trend is disputing yesterday's published reports that Brit luxury/sports car manufacturer Aston Martin will be sold to Louis Vuitton. According to MT, which cites "well-placed" UK sources, Aston's bags are packed and ready to leave Ford, but they do not have that iconic "LV" logo on them. Apparently the buyer is a group of high-finance types we've never heard of. They're set to pony up around $1 billion for the storied automaker.

The sale is said to include the factory, and Ford is still expected to retain a stake in the company. Motor Trend can't resist needling Autobild and the blogosphere for (supposedly) getting the buyer wrong. (Marketwatch, the major outlet that ran the story yesterday, gets a pass.) Somewhat ironically, MT uses its own blog to get its version of the Aston saga out to the public.

UPDATE: MT has updated their post to reference the Marketwatch story that many outlets (including Autoblog) picked up on and reported.

UPDATE 2: LVMH has dismissed reports that it is the buyer for Aston Martin as "pure rubbish."

Scoop: Louis Vuitton buys Aston Martin

All the bids are in and the winning bidder has been revealed: Aston Martin is being bought by LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, the French luxury goods consortium that produces upper-crust products ranging from leather trunks and wallets to champagne and cognac...and now exotic luxury sports cars, too.

In placing the highest bid, Louis Vuitton beat out some serious contenders, including consortia led by Aston's current boss, billionaire moguls and numerous heavy-hitting investment firms.

Ford Motor Company will reportedly retain 15% interest in Aston Martin when Louis Vuitton takes over. Although both Ford PAG and Louis Vuitton declined to comment to DowJones MarketWatch, the media outlet that broke the story, German car mag Autobild will be running the story tomorrow (Friday).

While there has been a history of fashion labels and automakers collaborating on special editions – including Aston Martin and Dunhill – the purchase of a stoic marque like Aston Martin is pioneering new ground, although Louis Vuitton does have an established history in sponsoring concours d'elegance.

Gold and brown DB9, anyone?

UPDATE: Motor Trend is reporting that the published reports regarding a sale to LVMH are inaccurate.

Chicago Auto Show: GM introduces the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche

We've already seen GM's SUV offerings that will spring forth from its new GMT900 platform; now, we take a step half-way to the pickups with the introduction of the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche. There aren't many surprises here - the midgate remains but with an improved central locking system and 2" more available cargo length, the tailgate gets some assistance from a torsion spring system, and a remote starter system is available. That starting system fires up either the standard 5.3L V8 and its 320 HP, or the 6.0L V8 with variable valve timing and 355 HP. Both engines route their power through the ubiquitous GM 4-speed automatic. The new 'lanche rides on standard 17-inch wheels or optional 20s, with a set of 18-inchers to show up late this year on the Z71. GM's long press release and several more photos are available after the jump - grab a snack and check it out.

ALL-NEW 2007 CHEVY AVALANCHE IS FLEXIBLE WITH PASSENGERS, CARGO AND FUEL
CHICAGO

Chevrolet introduced the 2007 Chevy Avalanche, the next generation of the industry’s most flexible utility vehicle. It combines the passenger-comfort attributes of an SUV with the cargo capability of a truck. The ’07 Avalanche is based on GM’s new, full-size SUV platform, which features more power with segment-leading fuel economy and flex-fuel capability; a sharper, more precise driving feel; increased interior refinement; and improved quietness.

Avalanche also delivers a 360-degree safety system of occupant protection and crash-avoidance technology that demonstrates GM’s commitment to providing world-class safety, including available head curtain side air bags and standard StabiliTrak stability control system with new rollover mitigation technology.

“Avalanche is vehicle without peers, selling more than 379,500 units from its spring 2001 launch through December 2005,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “Avalanche’s flexibility, from its SUV comfort and ingenious Midgate to its new family of flex-fuel-capable engines, delivers a truly unique combination of cargo and passenger options.”

The 2007 Avalanche will be available in the second quarter of 2006. It is offered in LS, LT and LTZ models, with 2WD and 4WD (a Z71 off-road package will be offered later in the model year). At the start of production, Avalanche will come with an efficient 5.3L V-8 with Active Fuel Management™ technology that seamlessly switches from eight-cylinder to four-cylinder operation to save fuel. Later, a new, all-aluminum 6.0L V-8 with Active Fuel Management and variable valve timing (VVT) will be available. Several available engines allow Avalanche to run on E85, a renewable fuel.

E85 is a blend of 85 percent ethyl alcohol (ethanol) and 15 percent gasoline. It delivers similar performance as regular gasoline and is a renewable, domestically produced fuel made from the starch and sugar in agricultural products – primarily corn. E85 also burns cleaner than regular gasoline, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. GM vehicles with E85 capability can run on any combination of E85 and regular gasoline.

GM is a leader in advancing E85 technology and use. More than 1.5 million GM vehicles on the road already are E85-capable.

 Trademark flexibility

Avalanche’s unparalleled flexibility enables it to function as an SUV, truck or both, thanks to the unique Midgate. Pioneered on the first-generation Avalanche, the clever Midgate opens to extend the cargo-carrying capability from the cargo bed’s 5.3-foot-long (1.6 m) length to 8.2 feet (2.5 m) – 2 inches (51 mm) longer than previous models. The rear seat must be folded to achieve maximum storage capability; with the rear seat up and the Midgate closed, Avalanche has room for up to six passengers.

When the Midgate is open and the rear seat is folded flat, Avalanche can carry 4-foot by 8-foot (1.2 m by 2.4 m) sheets of plywood with the tailgate closed. Storage compartments alongside the cargo box provide ample and lockable storage. The storage compartments also have drains, so they can be filled with ice and used as coolers. A three-piece rigid cargo cover with interlocking panels also is available.

New features on the ’07 model enhance Avalanche’s flexible attributes and reflect customer feedback:

Central-locking tailgate: Locking and unlocking the tailgate is more secure, as the conventional keyed lock is removed from the tailgate. Locking and unlocking functions are handled by the interior lock switches or from the Remote Keyless Entry fob.

Remote vehicle starting: Standard on some models and available on others, the remote vehicle starting system allows convenient start-up from a distance to pre-heat or pre-cool the vehicle’s interior.

Cargo cover retaining straps: New straps allow the cargo covers to be held securely in place when removed from the storage compartments.
Avalanche also has a new tailgate that is spring-loaded to reduce the effort needed to open or close it.

 Flexible powertrains

Avalanche is powered by a new Gen IV small-block V-8 family that delivers more power than comparable powertrains in previous models. Standard on 2WD models is a Vortec 5.3L V-8 with 320 horsepower (238 kw)* and 335 lb.-ft. of torque (470 Nm)*, which offers Active Fuel Management. Two versions of the Vortec 5.3L Gen IV V-8 – including an aluminum-block version that is standard in 4WD models – are compatible with E85.

The 5.3L aluminum-block V-8, standard on the 4WD Avalanche, delivers an estimated 310 horsepower (231 kw)** and 335 lb.-ft. (463 Nm)** of torque.

Coming later in the year is a powerful, new all-aluminum 6.0L V-8 with variable valve timing, as well as Active Fuel Management. The engine, available on 2WD and 4WD models, is rated at an estimated 355 horsepower (264 kw).** VVT helps optimize camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The system is enabled by a unique dual-equal cam phaser – the industry’s first application of VVT on a mass-produced V-8 cam-in-block engine. The unique dual-equal phaser adjusts the camshaft timing at the same rate for both the intake and exhaust valves. A Hydra-Matic 4L70 electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission is paired with the engine.

Contributing to Avalanche’s more efficient performance is improved aerodynamics. A more steeply raked windshield and smoother roofline improve airflow over the vehicle, while additional contributors to efficiency include a lower, wider front air dam, tighter tolerances and gaps between the fascias, lamps and grille openings, and improved front-end sealing that nearly eliminates air leak paths. These features all contribute to enhanced fuel economy and improved driving quietness, compared with previous models.

 Refined, convenient interior

Along with Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, the interior of the ’07 Avalanche represents significant new levels of refinement, comfort, quality and convenience. It is roomy and airy, thanks to a lower instrument panel and deeper windshield that improve outward visibility. Passenger space also is increased, including more shoulder space for rear passengers, which is packaged with the available roof-mounted head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for both seating rows.

Avalanche’s new front seats are designed to provide more comfort and easier entry/egress. Door pillar-mounted first-row three-point safety belts facilitate slimmer seat design, which helps increase cargo space behind the seats. Comfort has been enhanced with firmer foams, including more aggressive bolsters. The front-row seats have one-inch more aft travel than previous models.

The rear seat is unique to the Avalanche and enables easy access to the Midgate system. The seat folds flat, allowing longer items to be carried between the cargo bed and into the rear passenger compartment. Refinements throughout Avalanche’s spacious interior create an environment that exudes quality and precision. A two-tone color scheme is executed with new, softer and low-gloss materials for the instrument panel and other trim pieces. An all-Ebony interior is available. Additional details include LED backlighting for the instruments and chrome accents on instruments and vents. Flush-mounted accessories and controls, such as the climate control/radio center stack, create a seamless, “single unit” appearance. Also, there are almost no exposed metal hardware or latches, as all models feature enclosing “close-outs” around the seat bottoms and door sill trim plates.
New comfort features include an upgraded HVAC system, and storage capability is improved with the segment’s largest center console storage bin, a larger glove box and additional new storage compartments. Avalanche also offers a host of available convenience features, including:

Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist

Rearview camera system

Touch-screen navigation system

DVD rear-seat entertainment system with larger, 8-inch screen and enhanced features.

Avalanche also features an impressive new audio/navigation lineup, which provides quality entertainment and information. A new family of CD/MP3-compatible radios leads the audio lineup, with an enhanced DVD entertainment system that includes a larger, 8-inch screen (with in-dash loading). A new touch-screen navigation radio is available and incorporates the view monitor for the available rear-camera system.

 Distinctive exterior design

Avalanche’s all-new exterior, monochromatic design is leaner and more agile looking, with a more steeply raked windshield and smoother roofline accentuating the exterior length. Avalanche wears the new face of Chevrolet, with a large Chevy gold Bowtie, centered on a twin-port horizontal grille. The body-colored grille surround is inset with an argent texture mesh. Fog lamps and headlamps feature jewel-like optics. The lower fascia, incorporating the front license plate holder and integrated recovery hooks, is aggressively styled with a skid plate look that enhances Avalanche’s rugged, off-road appearance.

Avalanche’s front end styling reflects its capability. It includes the fast-rake windshield; a bulging power dome hood; a prominent new fender design with integrated wheel flares; a distinctive new grille and headlamps; and a full-wrap fascia. The wraparound fascia, which eliminates the conventional bumper-to-body gap, is one of the numerous attributes that gives the Avalanche a more refined look. It also enhances aerodynamics. There also is a new family of 17-inch and 20-inch wheels. Seventeen-inch wheels and tires are standard, with 20-inch factory-installed wheels available (standard on LTZ). The larger wheels fill Avalanche’s wheel houses, giving the vehicle a confident stance.

An available Z71 Off Road package (available in the fourth quarter of 2006) takes this aggressive look to the next level, with larger recovery hook openings, larger, more prominent fog lamps and specific grille texture and platinum chrome grille trim. Eighteen-inch wheels and tires also are part of the package.

Avalanche is offered in nine exterior colors: Greystone Metallic, Dark Blue Metallic, Sport Red Metallic, Bermuda Blue Metallic, Black, Summit White, Gold Mist Metallic, Sunburst Orange Metallic and Silver Birch Metallic.

 New full-size SUV foundation

Avalanche is built on GM’s new full-size SUV platform, which incorporates features such as a new, fully boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and an all-new, premium interior system that bolster the vehicle’s comfort, quality and capability. Wider front and rear tracks enhance handling and vehicle stability for a more confident road feel.

Extensive attention to detail was paid by Avalanche’s engineers to ensure a quiet driving experience. The new, stiffer frame reduces vibrations transmitted to the passenger cabin, while the strength and accuracy of the fully-boxed frame also enable more precise mounting and tuning of chassis and suspension components. This helps reduce vibration – even the tires on the large, 17-inch and 20-inch wheels were designed to reduce noise.

Noise-reducing components and materials are used throughout the body structure, including the headliner material, door seals and front-of-dash area. The engines also feature a quiet-tuned alternator and an acoustically tuned engine cover that reduces engine noise heard inside the vehicle. New door seals help reduce seal “pull-away” at highway speeds, which can cause wind noise. Also, a sleeker shape, thanks to improved aerodynamics, streamlined exterior mirrors and roof rack, more steeply raked windshield and tighter body gap tolerances, assures a quiet ride.

Avalanche’s quietness and smoothness are complemented by the Autoride suspension system, which is standard on LTZ. This segment-exclusive bi-state, real-time damping system provides an extremely refined ride with greatly reduced body motion. The system consists of a semi-active, two-position damping control system that responds in real time to road and driving conditions, based on body and wheel motion sensors.

Avalanche offers up to 8,000 pounds (3,629 kg) of towing capability, when properly equipped, enhancing its flexible, ready-for-anything capability.

 Safety story

The ’07 Avalanche offers security in the form of a 360-degree safety system of occupant protection and crash-avoidance technologies. New features include roof-mounted head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for both rows and front-seat safety belt pretensioners that are linked to the vehicle's sensing system to provide segment-exclusive deployment in rear-end crashes.

These features are integrated into a stronger vehicle structure that is also designed for improved compatibility with other vehicles. The roof-mounted head curtain air bags include design features that provide increased rollover protection and occupant containment. Sensors located at the front of the vehicle, in the side doors, and within the occupant compartment provide increased and more immediate crash detection. The vehicle's sensing system provides industry-exclusive capability to deploy front seat safety belt pretensioners during certain rear-end collisions, enhancing the belt system's ability to hold the occupants firmly in place.

The roof-mounted head curtain side air bag system incorporates one of the segment's first rollover indication sensors, which is located on the vehicle's center tunnel in the occupant compartment. The sensor monitors the vehicle's accelerations and roll rate. If these signals indicate an impending rollover, the roof-mounted head curtain side air bags deploy to provide an extra measure of occupant protection and containment. These rollover-capable head curtain side air bags stay inflated longer than air bags developed only for side impacts because rollover incidents can last longer. The deployment duration and other design features of the rollover-capable air bags combine to provide increased occupant protection and the ability to help keep occupants inside the vehicle.

Crash avoidance is bolstered through enhanced design and driver control dynamics, such as wider front and rear tracks, as well as more responsive suspensions – including a new coil-over-shock front suspension design and new rack-and-pinion steering. The vehicles are built on a stronger and stiffer, fully-boxed frame that contributes to enhanced crash energy management. The front frame section has been designed to optimize crush progression, resulting in improved energy absorption efficiency. The improved crush performance, enabled by hydroformed frame rails and efficient chassis component packaging, also comprehends design provisions that help improve vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility in the event of a frontal impact with a smaller vehicle.

 Additional safety features include:

Standard StabiliTrak stability control system with rollover mitigation technology

Standard dual-stage driver's front air bag

Standard dual-stage outboard-front passenger air bag with Passenger
Sensing System

Available roof-mounted head curtain side air bags for both seating rows

Standard front seat safety belt pretensioners with rear impact
deployment capability

Standard tire pressure monitoring system

Available rain-sensing wiper system

Available Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist that can detect certain stationary objects in the rearward path of the vehicle and send an audible warning sound and display via three LEDs on the right D-pillar

Available rearview camera system designed to provide the driver with
a view of people or objects in the rearward path of the vehicle

Standard pull-up/push-down power window switches

All models come with the Generation 6 OnStar system (with a one-year Safe and Sound service plan). The system includes the General Motors Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system, making crash data available to emergency services to potentially dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster. If the vehicle is in a crash that activates an air bag, the OnStar system automatically notifies an OnStar advisor, who will check on the occupants or summon emergency help if necessary. OnStar also can assist authorities in locating a vehicle if it is reported stolen (ability to locate stolen vehicles varies with conditions).
